Introduction
Online Bus Terminal (OBT) is a groundbreaking initiative to establish a single, integrated, digital platform for all inter-district bus transportation in Bangladesh. It serves as an effective, technology-based model to modernize bus management and enhance road safety.
Background
Every day in Bangladesh, many lives are lost to road accidents. Despite the enactment of the Road Transport Act 2018, this trend has not been halted. To achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal of halving road deaths by 2030, we need realistic, technology-integrated solutions—OBT is the answer to that need.
Management Structure and Legal Basis
Under Section 118 of the Road Transport Act, 2018, transport companies are legally required to provide data and follow directives. Based on this legal framework, the OBT platform is designed to include comprehensive data on all inter-district bus companies, drivers, guides, vehicles, terminals, counters, and passenger services across the country.
Key Features
Bus schedules, routes, timetables, and driver/guide details with photos for inter-district buses.
Records of route permits, fitness certificates, and accident history for all buses.
Google Maps links for bus terminals, stations, and counters.
District-wise schedule input and monitoring in a real-time database.
Verification and enforcement by traffic and highway police through QR code scanning.
LED displays of bus schedules in key city locations.
Digital passenger rating, complaint submission, and review system.
Emergency alarm system enabling quick response by locating passengers instantly.
Transforming Passenger Services
With OBT, passengers can check fares, schedules, and destinations online, find counters via Google Maps, and even book tickets by contacting counter numbers. Passenger reviews and complaints help assess driver performance and ensure accountability.
Supporting Traffic Management
OBT supports effective traffic management by enabling real-time, schedule-based control of bus operations. Through monitoring of departure and arrival times, OBT helps regulate bus movements, prevent random roadside boarding, and reduce unplanned stoppages. Real-time schedule updates allow operators and authorities to spread vehicle departures more evenly, avoid peak-time clustering, and quickly respond to delays or disruptions—resulting in reduced congestion, smoother traffic flow, and more disciplined use of road space.
Smart Mobility for Sustainable Tourism
A digital registration system for tourist buses has been introduced as an innovative step toward building a smooth, disciplined, and truly tourist-friendly transport ecosystem in Bangladesh's leading tourist cities. Through mandatory online registration at OBT prior to city entry, tourist buses are integrated into a transparent, centrally managed system that provides real-time digital guidance on approved entry points, designated terminals, and regulated parking zones. This technology-enabled initiative reduces traffic congestion, curbs illegal parking, enhances road safety, and safeguards the natural environment, while delivering a seamless and stress-free travel experience for visitors. By aligning smart transport management with sustainability and service excellence, the initiative positions Cox's Bazar and Rangamati as forward-looking, eco-friendly, and well-governed tourist destinations in Bangladesh.
Innovating Enforcement for Sustainable Mobility
OBT introduces a QR code–enabled, mobile-based digital inspection system that replaces slow, manual roadside checks with instant, real-time verification. By eliminating unnecessary delays and vehicle idling, the system converts operational efficiency directly into environmental benefits—reducing fuel consumption, saving energy, and lowering emissions to improve air quality. Integrated seamlessly with frontline enforcement through a secure mobile application, OBT represents a low-cost, high-impact technological innovation that enhances compliance, efficiency, and sustainability in road transport.
Empowering Passengers for Safer Road
At OBT, road safety is not only the responsibility of drivers or authorities—it is a shared commitment. Through OBT's rating, review, and comment system, passengers play an active role in making roads safer. Every journey you rate and every review you submit helps promote responsible and professional driving, identify unsafe practices and service gaps, support data-driven decisions by transport operators and enforcement agencies, and improve overall service quality and accountability. OBT transforms passengers from customers into road safety partners. Your voice matters—because safer roads begin with informed feedback and collective responsibility.
Emergency Alarm: A Digital Shield for Every Passenger
Imagine a journey where safety travels with you—literally in your pocket. Recent alarming incidents of highway robbery, violence, and harassment have cast a shadow over public transport. In response, the Road Safety Wing of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, in partnership with Bangladesh Police, has mandated enhanced emergency measures. While traditional panic buttons are costly and slow to deploy, Online Bus Terminal (OBT) offers a revolutionary, smarter solution—no hardware, just genius.
